Wow. One of the best episodes I’ve listened to in a while. I also grew up in an authoritarian state (Soviet Union) and currently live in the UK and I’m forever telling people I can see the early signs of both UK and US going down an authoritarian path from a mile away and people think I’m exaggerating. But it’s pretty mind blowing to hear this perspective from Sunny going even further than that.

And re: AI, it’s depressing. An AI powered web search that’s being pushed onto us (that’s often isn’t correct) apparently uses x10 more energy than a normal web search. I fear it’s all an attempt to get people used to no longer going directly to the sources (and looking at multiple things before making a deduction or forming an opinion) and just trust whatever the first result on Google tells them. This is extremely dangerous.

Very informative and eye opening. The bit about the myth of the white American origin and religious freedom was pure genius! And as an Afghan I appreciate the Taliban comparison.

I’m so glad the tech “side effects”are becoming more and more exposed and the allure of technology as harmless progress is over.

Thank you so much for this enlightening conversation!

Here are some quotes that I want to remember:

🔥"The empire is burning, and we just gotta get out of the way." Saira Rao

"Its the lack of humanity, we've made choices to deny basic needs for millions of Americans, its the lack of critical thinking skills, the lack of knowledge, and here we are." Saira Rao

🔥"You can have democracy OR you can have great swaths of wealth concentrated in the hands of the few, you can not have both." Sunny Singh

"It's not that the Empire doesn't have money, what it doesn't have is the will to care for its people." Sunny Singh

"The Western fabrication of the Western liberal myth." Sunny Singh

"There's a kind of comprehensive brainwashing that exists in the U.S. Even the most extraordinarily open minded, well-traveled Americans somehow come back to the, "Greatest nation in history. It's an ideological and emotional function. There's no grown ups in the room, they just keep feeding the toddler the sweets. There's no end to how many sweets a toddler will eat." Sunny Singh

"The US has a kind of "low intensity" warfare against minorities. The might of the State has turned on its minorities. It's mad that [the Empire] is so afraid of its own population that they have monstrous machines pointed at and murdering minorities."
